The Class 3 Weapons License is an additional certification required for dealing with  different forms of guns accessories, concealed weapons, ammunition and automatic firearms that do not fall under the Federal Firearms Laws and regulations. The Gun Control Act, which was established in 1968, classifies these forms of weapons and gun accessories as title 2 weapons. In order to import, sell, or manufacture type 2 weapons an individual has to have a special Class 3 weapons or Federal Firearms License. The following is a list of some of the firearms and the 

Class 3 FFL License Requirements:

1· Short Barreled Rifles – Short Barreled Rifles which require a Class 3 licenses are any rifles where the overall length of the weapon is less than 26 inches or the barrel of the gun is less than 16 inches long.

2· Suppressors or Silencers – Suppressors or silencers refers to any muffling or silencing device that is portable, can be attached to a variety of weapons and quiets the noise of the weapon when deployed.
3· Machine Guns – Any weapon that when deployed fires more than one round without the user reloading the weapon are known as machine guns. These weapons, or any type of fully automatic weapon, fall under the machine guns category and require the class 3 license.

4· All Other Weapons (AOW) – The AOW category of weapons refers to any form of gun that is in a disguised or non-traditional format.

5· Short Barreled Shotguns – A short barreled shotgun requiring a Class 3 (SOT) license includes any shotgun where  the entire weapon is less than 26 inches in length and the barrel is less than 18 inches in length and .

6· Destructive Devices – Destructive devices refers to gas weapons, bombs and explosives including hand grenades.

Be able to prove you have not violated any aspect  of the Gun Control Act.

Be at least 21 years of age at the time of applying for an FFL license.

Be able to store all weapons within your home or business in a safe manner that adheres to local and federal guidelines.

Obtain a Class 3 Weapons License

On your journey to getting your Federal Firearms License, and a class 3 weapons license, you’ll undoubtedly run across a wide variety of acronyms, confusing definitions, and legal conundrums. At first glance, the task of getting an FFL may seem impossible, but it’s not. Don’t let this stop you. As difficult as these regulations seem, once you familiarize yourself with the verbage and basic tenents behind them, getting a license becomes an easier accomplishment. Having said that, let’s talk about the NFA and the types of weapons covered by it. Go straight to the site here

When dealing with firearms, you’ll often see the term NFA firearms or NFA weapons. It stands for the National Firearms Act and is a law that was enacted in 1934. Not only does this law call for the mandatory registration of all Title II weapons, it requires that an excise tax be paid on the manufacture and sale or transfer of these weapons. Another important facet of this law is that it requires that any transfer of title II weapons across state lines is to be reported to the Department of Justice.

So what are Title II weapons ? Well, according to the government, there are two types of weapons–Title I and Title II. Title I weapons are primarily rifles, shotguns, and handguns. Title II weapons are machine guns, silencers, short barreled shotguns, short barreled rifles, and the any other weapon category, (AOW).  A class 3 refers to the class 3 special weapons license, that’s needed to become a dealer of NFA firearms. Now that you are familiar with the NFA, and the two types of weapons, let’s look a little closer at the Title II weapons that are covered by the NFA.

Title 2 weapons License and Weapons types

Machine gun–This is any gun with the ability to discharge more than one cartridge from a single trigger pull. Also included within this category are the parts that make up a machine gun.

Short barreled shotgun, (SBS)–This includes any smooth bore shotgun with a barrel length of less than 18″ or an overall length of less than 26″

Short barreled rifle, (SBR)–Much like the Short barreled shotgun, the short barreled rifle is any rifled bore firearm that has an overall length of less than 26″, or an overall barrel length of less than 16″.

Silencers–These include any devices or parts that are designed to silence, muffle, or disguise the sound of any portable firearm.

Destructive Device, (DD)–This category encompasses two separate classes. The first covers grenades or explosive devices, poison gas weapons, or bombs and incendiary devices. The second class covers large bore, non-sporting firearms. By definition anything that’s not used for sporting with a bore over 1/2″ falls under this class.

Any other Weapons (AOW)–This category is for weapons and parts that don’t fit the other categories. It covers any shoulder fired weapon with a barrel length between 12″-18″. These can be either smooth or rifled bore. It also covers smooth bore pistols, cane guns, and pen guns.
